Clava Cairns in the Highlands of Scotland

Followers of this blog, and my Instagram will know that I am a true Scottish Highlander.  I own three kilts after all!  So on one of my latest trips back to the motherland I decided to visit Clava Cairns.

Clava Cairns are a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex of passage graves; ring cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones in a beautiful setting. Otherwise known as the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Bulnuaran of Clava are a group of three Bronze Age cairns located near Inverness. A hugely significant and exceptionally well preserved prehistoric site, Clava Cairns is a fantastic example of the distant history of Highland Scotland, dating back about 4,000 years.

I remember visiting these stones when I was a child, and yet after all those years the eerie feeling that sweeps over you when you see them is no different. There is something magical, and yet a little scary about this site.  The setting of the stones within a circle of tall old trees overlook them certainly adds to the ambience.  But this site is a must visit.  Being able to walk amongst the 4,000 year old stones really does make you feel like you are part of ancient Scotland. So I would highly recommend taking the time to stop at Clava Cairns, and pay your respects to history.
