Time with the Apple Iphone 7

So the Iphone 7 is finally out on the market and since its launch, there’s been a multitude of opinions on Apple’s new smartphone. Personally we’ve been sceptical as on paper, there doesn’t appear to be much of an innovative change in the tech giant’s new release. So with Three, we’ve taken time out to have a play with the Iphone 7 compared to our old Iphone 6s to really see if there is a difference worth investing in.

The exterior

Apple have opened up their colour box a little wider, offering you real Iphone fans black (finally) and the cool looking Jet black. To focus on the jet black option for a moment, we have to say is pretty good looking and will make your phone stand out from the crowd (debatable if that’s a good thing at the moment). But be warned now, as the jet black choice will require continuous wiping and polishing, where your fingerprints will make its home on the phones surface like a kids sticky fingers does to recently cleaned windows. But as it is almost inevitable, I wouldn’t let that put you off.

Another to remember is that gone is the joy of charging your phone and listening to your jams at the same time. Apple has creatively relinquished the need of a headphone jack, in exchange for a multipurpose lightening port. In one way this will help stimulate the Bluetooth headphone market more than it ever imagined. But for those of us that aren’t ready to additionally invest in wireless sound equipment (especially after investing in the Iphone 7, this is a technological step change that we’re just not ready for. Fortunately Apple has given us mercy by providing you with a lightening port-headphone jack converter, so you can resume listening to music with your existing headphones.

Camera

Probably the bit on the Iphone 7 we were more intrigued to see to be honest. As the competition have proven they can raise the bar on smartphone cameras, there’s been much anticipation on whether the Iphone 7 can keep up. In or opinion the 12 MP camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture definitely makes an impressive difference for those low-light photos and 4K video images and we have a few examples to show what it’s like.

Better lighting, richer colours and a better auto focus, makes for a relatively decent camera improvement.

Function

It will probably take some time for the new non-push home button of the Iphone 7 to sink in for the masses, but as a previous user of the Apple watch, it’s something you get used to very quickly. The sensitivity is very responsive, almost more responsive than the old school home button in use on previous models. This can also be adjusted if you want the taptic engine to be less/more reactive to the touch. But all in all, it’s a nice addition and something you will grow to love.

So after a week of messing around, playing with the Iphone 7 features and being amazed that the battery has managed to last longer than 6 hours, I can ultimately say that it’s a good job by Apple. Would we invest in upgrading to this new model? We’re not in a rush to do so, but the Apple fiend in me wouldn’t say no if one fell on our laps.

The new Iphone 7 is available on Three, where you can also enjoy the feel at home package. So now you can also go out take shots around parts of the world on your new Iphone 7, with no fear of charges.
